Chichén Itzá MapsThe archaeological precinct of Chichén Itzá covers several square miles, approximately 5,200' East to West and 12,000' North to South. Chichén Itzá is managed by the Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia, (INAH). Interestingly, the Barbachano family holds the title to the land of Chichen, which is considered legally separate from the antiquities themselves, which are federal property. The maps presented here are from the Carnegie Institution of Washington. The Carnegie map was surveyed by J. O. Kilmartin and J. P. O'Neill and first published in Karl Ruppert's "The Caracol at Chichen Itza, Yucatan, Mexico" (1935). The version presented here was reprinted with revisions in Rupperts' "Chichen Itza: Architectural Notes and Plans" (1952). The maps here come are excerpted from the Carnegie web site: http://www.mesoweb.com/chichen/resources/map/. The scale of the maps here are given by the latitude/longitude readings along the top of the frame. One second of latitude is roughly 100 feet. Chichén Itzá is close enough to the equator for one second of longitude to be roughly 100 feet as well.

The Caracol and EnvironsThe most significant archaeoastronomy monument at Chichén Itzá is the Caracol. More than an observatory in the Western sense, the Caracol was a record of observations of Venus, set in stone.
