Site Work at Chichen Itza
The abundant epigraphic detail at Chichen Itza presents a challenge for any documentation technique. The sheer scale of the surfaces covered with inscriptions makes traditional digital capture techniques ungainly, at best. At INSIGHT, we've been working with photometric stereo for several years as a more efficient way to capture large surfaces. The bas relief at Chichen plays well to photometric stereo's well-documented strengths. The stone surfaces are nearly Lambertian, and the walls are nearly planar, which enables good reconstructions of the surface.
In October 2005, we performed our first tests on site at Chichen. The article below explains the basics of our process, and the results.
