June 2007 Photometric Data - Platform of Eagles and Jaguars

Using one camera, we acquired 7 images with a remote strobe in roughly compass point positions relative to the test surface. Specifications follow: Image format: TIFF (8-bit)

Image size: 2592x3872

Camera: NIKON D200

Lens: Nikon 24-85mm F/2.8-4 D

Focal Length: 35mm

Metering: 1/200 sec - F/25

ISO: 800

Geometry Results

The following images present the recovered scene geometry in a number of ways.

NOTES

- For this test, we used a fiducial square 9cm square.

- We kept the region of interest in the frame towards center, to minimize camera distortion.

- The strobe position in the far right position was blocked by the wall -- a circumstance we'll find often during the real field work.

- 1/200 second exposure required for the radio flash unit we used to sync (compared to 1/8000 sync we managed in Egypt). This meant we were forced to let ambient light participate more in the scene. At 1/8000th second, ambient light is neglible. At 1/200th second, no matter aperture, ambient light is clearly seen if the ambient is not subtracted out as a post step.

- Despite our best efforts, we saw some camera movement over the images -- due to the fact that by dint of our official permission we were not allowed to use a larger, rugged tripod. This shouldn't be an issue in the upcoming "full permissions" field work.

- We used "fresh" targets for this test. After only a few minutes of exposure to morning humidity, the black toner began to flake a bit, and small bubbles appeared in the applied fiducial label. That was surprising, since the adhesive was flat and fairly strong! Clearly we need rugged targets, and plenty of back-ups.
